It is time to go hunting for Red Deer!
The mission goals are:
Travel to Rotwald
Harvest a male red deer and earn a BRONZE score or higher
I've mostly found Red Deer in the are around the two lakes. Well, you will run into them elsewhere as well but those lakes give nice shooting options.
Red Deer males are usually easier to scare then the females so be sure to sneak around and make low noise. Also keep the wind in your face (if you don't have the anti odor spray)

Travel to the cabin at the Rathenfeldt Strawfields
From there, when you arrive you will spot already marked tracks of a human. The mission is basically to just follow those tracks until the mission is completed.

In this mission we will help Mr Sommer to evaluate a new roe deer scent spray by using it to harvest three roe deers in Köningsberg.
Mission goals are:
Travel to Köningsberg
Use the Roe Deer Scent
Harvest 3 roe deer
I started out at a outpost in Köningsberg by heading to the shop and buying a Roe Deer Scent. Be sure to put it in your backpack and then to your quick use list from your inventory before heading out.
I think that the idea when using scents for hunting is to actually move with the wind on your back instead of the normal wind in your face way. I.e. spray some roe deer scent and head out in the direction that the wind is blowing.
I also used the Roe Deer Caller to help with the odds.
Usual tactic is:
Roe deer calls out
I stop and use the Roe Deer Caller
Use binoculars to spot the animal
Use the Ranger .243 rifle to place a bullet in the animal
Do this 3 times and you complete the mission.
Roe deer hunting is usually quite straight forward even without the scent, just be sure to not run around once the roe deer has made its initial call, you don't want to spook it as it runs to the other side of the map in a blink if it decides to.
Another tracking quest. This time from Mr Sommer and the mission is to track Roe Deer
Travel to Spreeberg
Identify a call from a roe deer
Find a track from a roe deer
Find droppings from a roe deer
Easiest way to do this is to run until you find tracks, follow them until you find droppings. Meanwhile use your roe deer caller every 30 seconds. Roe deer are very alert and usually keep in the area, chances are if you make some noise and run around following the tracks the roe deer will notice you and call out a warning call.
Just remember to not do the mistake that I did. After I found the tracks and identified the call I happened to shoot the roe deer and harvest it, and the game removed all traces of that individual. Ended up running around another 10 minutes to find another roe deer just to find its droppings.
This time we will go fox hunting with a 60 lb bow.
This one took me 8 attempts, some for hours and some shorter over a 2 week period to complete.
The mission goal from Mr Sommer is:
Travel to Spreeberg
Harvest 1 fox downed with 60 lb bow
The region in Spreeberg where I've mostly found foxes is the Spreeberg Lake area, namely the narrow passage where the road goes between the two bodies of water.
The tactic I finally was lucky with was:
Run around the area until you find fox tracks, use the Jackrabbit Predator Caller every 30 seconds in case you get lucky.
Slow down and move while crouched and follow the tracks
When you find fox spilling that is 'Just now', stop and find a higher position with a better view like on top of a rock. Lie down and use the Jackrabbit caller until you spot the fox and then try to judge the distance with the help of you map by placing a waypoint
Take the shot with the bow. You need to get up to crouch position to use it.
This time we will be hunting bisons, not just for photos..
Mission details:
Harvest a male bison weighing at least 700 kg
No area restrictions in this so I decided to move south to the Rinderland Gorge area. There are usually always bison tracks on the path from the outpost to the hunting stand so that's where I begun.
Directly when I hit the open ground I saw 2 bisons, one male and a female. Why I didn't take a shot there directly is the question. But after a while of tracking (moving in crouched position) I came up on them again and downed the male.
Less then 700 kg but I found tracks of another bison in the 650-800 range and started tracking that one. But again no luck.
And again found tracks of another and tracked it for a while until I got a shot at it and it was also less then 700 kg.
Lastly I found tracks of a beast of 745-90 kg and thought that it for sure would be more then 700 kg. The tracks went a little back and forth around the area and then suddenly it was 50 meters from me, a quick shot with my Rangemaster got in a flesh wound, I guess the game bugged a little as I found it standing 10 meters from the first hit and was able to put 2 more bullets in it before it went down.
Harvest results: 745 kg, mission completed.
Not my cleanest hunt in this game but was kind of fun at least. Took some questionable shots but in the end this is just a game, not the kind of shots I would take on a real hunt.
Another bison quest. This time a photo challenge in the Ernsdorf area.
Mission details:
Take a picture of 3 different bisons in Ernsdorf
I managed to sneak a picture of a bison directly after completing the #3 mission, he also got me pretty good in the night time and I had to restart at an outpost. (still the picture counted)
My tactic for the rest of this mission was to do it in day time, didn't like the bisons during night.
Mainly I ran around the mountain in the northern Ernsdorf until I found some tracks and started following them while crouched.
The thing with bisons seems to be that they just suddenly appear in front of you if you have done everything right, i.e. no sound and sneaking around stealthily. I ran into a horde of them and just clicked some pictures and finished the mission.
Time has come for our first real bison hunt. No area restrictions, so I decided to try my luck in the Ernsdorf area.
The mission is as follows
Harvest a female bison at night
As I did not have any big game weapon I first decided to grind roe deer, red deer and red fox until I got 60000 for the Rangemaster 338. That took a while but was a lot of fun.
Once I had the rifle, I set out into Ernsdorf in the late afternoon with the intention to find bison tracks before nightfall. Once I did I started to follow them and pretty soon in became dark and I had to use my flashlight.
Bisons move a lot and even their walk is fast, so be sure to be silent but fast to catch up. Probably you will catch them at their next need zone.
Spot a single female bison with your binoculars and aim low behind the front leg.
Move forward and harvest it. Be aware of the other bison in the area as they may decide to kill you.
This one took me a while also. Tracked in total 7 bisons but they all left the area of the mission. Lastly I just settled in the hunting stand in the area and went to brew some coffee. When I came back there were bisons just in front of me. So binoculars and spot one, mission done.
This one took a while, my best tip is to get a 4x4 from an outpost and then just drive around until you see a white bison body and then drive up to it and harvest it.
I found it while driving downhill from the hunting stand towards the lookout. But as we all know this game, it may be random.
Spoiler: the cause of the 'illness' seems to be lead poisoning based on the harvest screen that states that the bison was killed with a .454 Flat Nosed Hard-Cast Bullet..... Guess there was some kind of limitation in the game engine : )
Another photo quest! I really don't like these but at least this time it did not bug out at the last possible moment!
Mission details:
Travel to southeastern Petershain
Find a Fallow Deer
Make sure you have the Königsberg Lake in the background
Take a photo
This one has taken me 3 calendar weeks to complete. And maybe 20 hours game time (also doing other stuff while just waiting for animals to appear)
The first week I found a Fallow Deer but I guess the bush around the shoreline was too thick to get a good photo. After that I've tried different tactics among others to wait prone on rocks around their need areas but with no luck at all.
What I did when I finally got the picture.
Starting out at the outpost in southeastern Petershain
Slowly make my way to the hunting tower on the hill
Get distracted by a red fox and spend 5 minutes to try to lure it from the hunting stand
Remember my mission and exit the hunting stand
Move slowly toward north
Spot a Fallow Deer at 70 meters
Crawl towards the Fallow Deer and try not to make any noises
Loose sight of the Fallow Deer
Panic and crawl a little more
At 44 meters spot it again as it is moving
Bring up camera and click away and get lucky that one photo gets accepted
No luck all skill! Hehe, maybe not.. As all missions in this game, its pure random. One can spend 3 hours trying to find a Fallow Deer with no luck or find it the first thing within 12 minutes and complete the mission.
A lot of coyote hunting missions in theHunter Call of the Wild take place in the Cheelah area. Let's look at good spots to find coyotes!
Around the Cheelah Lake
Map of Cheelah Lake with my best coyote hunting areas marked with red
This area is a pain but there are missions that require you to locate coyotes around the Cheelah Lake. My best luck has been in the woods on the northern shore and up in the eastern mountains.
And my best tactic in this area has been:
Do something else entirely and let them spot you
Stop, crouch or crawl towards the sound and at the same time use the caller to attract their attention.
Keep track so that the coyote does not have time to circle you and try to spot it with your binoculars
Take the shot or crawl closer to get a photo
In the Cheelah area in general
If I need to go coyote hunting in the Cheelah area in general I would go to the mountain to the north of the Cheelah Hiking Village (red square on the map above). Here I have found packs of coyotes from time to time and in general got most of my harvests here.
Here the best tactic is to follow tracks as there usually are multiple coyotes in this area. Only a few times that I've not found any up here in the mountains.
In the Cheelah Hiking Village area, the blue square is your friend. But you need a lot of patience and call, and call and call before you might have luck to spot one. Be prepared to return multiple times before you encounter your prey here in this area.
Here in the blue square, sitting still and calling is your best tactic.
As always with this game, no guarantees. The randomness is just pure hell and a lot of patience is needed for any hunt that you do!
If you find this helpful, or have other experiences in the Cheelah area regarding coyotes, don't hesitate to leave a comment!
I continued in the same region as Vualez #5, to the north of the Cheelah Hiking Village. North of the outpost there.
First thing first, be sure to buy and equip a .357 magnum revolver, a sight for it and ammo.
Also, as we have completed the Vualez #5, we already have the Jackrabbit Predator Caller. It will come in use this time as well.
I headed north-west towards the hunting stand and found tracks from Coyotes there. Followed up into the hills and found a large group of Coyotes there. Took aim and shoot a few of them, thinking damn this was easy.
After harvesting the first one that was a clear hit (the other shots were more chancing) I started to follow the footprints and blood on the ground from the second coyote and spent about an hour following a trail that went back towards itself and just was too complicated to follow through. Really frustrating.
Next day I went on a tour to other regions on the map trying to find Coyotes, no luck at all. Only a few deer.
Back at the outpost in Cheelah Hunting Village, I went back to the hunting stand and was called out by a coyote almost immediately. It got spooked as the wind was directly towards it but at least I got a trail to follow.
Using the Jackrabbit Predator Caller and following the trail crouched I finally got called at again and then I could crawl to a rock and get better perspective of the area and spot the Coyote and take a shot.
After running to it and harvesting it the mission was completed. 4 hours real time.
Tip: be sure to be closer then 50 meters to the target before taking the shot, its a revolver mission, not a rifle one : )
It is time for the next Vualez mission, this time number 5.
We have to:
Travel to Cheelah Hiking Village
Use the Predator "Jackrabbit" Caller
Harvest 2 Coyotes
The video above with its ~15 minutes is condensed from 9 hours of footage.
First part is easy, just get to the Cheelah Hiking Village, I decided to take the lookout tower to start with and then move to the Hunting Lodge so that I had a spawn point closely (I don't own the DLCs)
While moving around, use the Jackrabbit caller like once or twice a minute so that eventual Coyotes will get interested.
The first Coyote was found after I took down one Blacktail Deer, then I suddenly found the Coyote footprints and used the Predator caller again to get it interested. Once identifier it was just a well-placed shot and one of two Coyotes were bagged within one hour of getting the mission.
The second one turned out to be a problem. Over 3 days I sneaked around the area and sat in cover and used the caller during the morning hours, afternoon hours and during night time with no luck.
Tip: Move slowly if you have to, make sure the sound meter is at zero. And make sure you move crouched. Don't run around. (even if that works from time to time as well). But for the long run, be stealthy. The Coyotes are good at spotting you and keeping their distance.
After no sign of a Coyote for 8 real world hours I decided to move around a bit, very slowly and using the caller during the night time in the game and from nowhere I got a mating call back. Used the Jackrabbit Predator Caller once. Crawled slowly backward to get a better view of the landscape and tried to spot the Coyote with the binoculars. After a little while it appeared a bit to the left of the call and I managed to get my scope to 75 meter and place a shot at it.
Mission completed.
Another tip: Coyotes will try to circle you when you call them. So they will not come straight for you, keep your eyes open and pan the whole area to spot it.
I might do some other missions in between before continuing the Vualez story arch..
